Day 8 - We leave  Bakkagerði and make the long drive to  Jökulsárgljúfur National Park

Every city and town we visited in Iceland had some public art. We are told that the sculptures reference ancient tales and sagas. While we  appreciated all that we saw, we  always left clueless.

  • The caption is in Icelandic so that didn't help. Nice public picnic table.
  • Today, 80 percent of Icelander's homes are heated geothermally and many of the rest use electric heat. This, the oldest house in Bakkagerði shows how it was in the good old days.
  • Downtown Bakkagerði.

We spend a long stretch driving the Ring Road as it cuts inland. This is a part of Iceland we have not seen - a semi-arid volcanic desert.

  • Standing at exactly 66 degrees North Latitude (as confirmed by the GPS near Andrea's left hand) we model our new 66 degrees North fleece jackets. Because of these new jackets, people assume we are native Icelanders.
  • Our peek at the 60 plus percent of Iceland that is accessible using specialized 4 wheel drive vehicles. Our Kia is not one of these.
  • Another look at the Highlands as we follow the Ring Road towards Jökulsárgljúfur.
